Éamonn Ó Dónaill – Director of Education

Éamonn Ó Dónaill, who is Gaelchultúr Teoranta’s Education Director, is originally from the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht in Donegal and has been teaching Irish to adults since 1981. He spent six years (1996 – 2002) working as Director of the Irish Language Centre in University College Dublin. During his time in that position he established a new course, Diploma in Applied Irish, which aimed to enable civil servants and others to conduct their work through Irish. He left his job in UCD in 2002 to work as a freelance language consultant. He was one of the founders of Gaelchultúr in 2004 and has been working with the company on a full-time basis since 2005.

Éamonn was one of the founders of the successful Irish language club, Sult, in 1999 and has been involved in its operation since then. He has been running Irish language classes for adults in Dublin city centre since 2001. He was also editor of the online Irish language magazine Beo! (www.beo.ie) from its establishment in 2001 until summer 2007.

Éamonn was language consultant of the television series for learners of Irish at intermediate level, Turas Teanga, broadcast on RTÉ in 2004, and he also wrote the book accompanying the series. His book Teach Yourself Irish Grammar was published by Hodder and Stoughton in September 2005 and his latest book, Gramadach gan Stró!, has been available since April 2008. Éamonn was also language consultant of Now You’re Talking, a series for complete beginners in Irish broadcast on both RTÉ and BBC in 1995 and was the author of the accompanying book.

Éamonn is an experienced trainer of teachers and has been running training courses since 1992. He was involved in developing the syllabuses and examinations for levels A1 and A2 of Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge (www.teg.ie), a testing and certification system for adult learners of Irish, the first of its kind, which is being developed by the Language Centre, NUI Maynooth.
