aonair nó singil

Hi there,

Really enjoying the course. Just a quick question. Is it possible to say Tá mé i m’aonair when referring to marital status as a substitute for Tá mé singil?  Or does aonair refer to a more general sense of being alone?

Mar a dúirt tú, tá ciall rud beag difiúil ag ‘Tá mé i m’aonar’, nach n-oireann do chur síos ar stádas pósta.

As you said, ‘Tá mé i m’aonar’ has a slightly different meaning that wouldn’t suit a description of marital status.



Tá mé i m’aonar san oifig inniu.

I’m alone in the office today.

Chuaigh mé ar laethanta saoire i m’aonar.

I went on holidays on my own.



B’fhearr cloí le ‘Tá mé singil’ agus tú ag labhairt faoi stádas pósta. Nó d’fhéadfá ceann de na habairtí seo a úsáid:

It would be better to stick to ‘Tá mé singil’ when speaking about marital status. Or you could use one of these sentences:



Níl mé pósta.

I’m not married.

Níl mé ag siúl amach le haon duine.

I’m not going out with anyone.
