Irish as a global language

Irish has become a truly global language since the advent of the Web. There are thousands of people learning Irish in countries such as Canada, the United States, Australia, Russia, the Czech Republic, France and England. Beo! (www.beo.ie), the online magazine in Irish, attracts around 50,000 visitors a month, and a large proportion of those attending language courses for adults in Gaeltacht areas during the summer months come from abroad. On the next pages, we profile a learner and an Irish language organisation in the US to give some flavour of what’s happening in Irish internationally.
